After suffering a left knee injury in the opening match in Mumbai, Sanju Samson has been ruled out of the final two Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka. The wicketkeeper-batter stayed behind in Mumbai for scans and a specialist's opinion, and was recommended to rest and undergo rehabilitation rather than traveling to Pune with the Indian team.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Wankhede in Mumbai as he attempted a diving catch during the opening over of the Sri Lankan chase (January 3). He caught the ball, but after tumbling to the ground, he was unable to hold onto it. He continued to field during the game, but it is said that he afterwards had swelling, which prompted a request that he seek medical treatment.
Pathum Nissanka was caught off the bowling of Hardik Pandya, who had forced a leading edge from the right-handed opener on the second legal ball of the over—the very first of Sri Lanka's innings. At mid-off, Samson was fielding.
Samson's successor is Vidarbha-born, 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma. Jitesh played for Punjab Kings in his IPL debut in 2022. During his 12 games, Jitesh scored 234 runs with a strike rate of 163.63, with a high of 44.
