Samson will not play in the remaining T20Is against SL: Jitesh will take his place

After suffering a left knee injury in the opening match in Mumbai, Sanju Samson has been ruled out of the final two Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka. The wicketkeeper-batter stayed behind in Mumbai for scans and a specialist's opinion, and was recommended to rest and undergo rehabilitation rather than traveling to Pune with the Indian team.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Wankhede in Mumbai as he attempted a diving catch during the opening over of the Sri Lankan chase (January 3). He caught the ball, but after tumbling to the ground, he was unable to hold onto it. He continued to field during the game, but it is said that he afterwards had swelling, which prompted a request that he seek medical treatment.

Pathum Nissanka was caught off the bowling of Hardik Pandya, who had forced a leading edge from the right-handed opener on the second legal ball of the over—the very first of Sri Lanka's innings. At mid-off, Samson was fielding.

Samson's successor is Vidarbha-born, 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma. Jitesh played for Punjab Kings in his IPL debut in 2022. During his 12 games, Jitesh scored 234 runs with a strike rate of 163.63, with a high of 44. In addition, he amassed 224 runs in ten games while maintaining a 175 strike rate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy competition of 2022.

Arshdeep Singh, who was unable to participate in the opening game, is now reportedly available for selection. Due to his illness, he was forced to miss the game, allowing Shivam Mavi to earn his first international cap. Mavi continued to dazzle everyone by producing a four-wicket haul in the contest.

The Indian bowlers played well throughout the match and were able to hold the opposition to a manageable total of 162, although Arshdeep's availability may present some selection difficulties for the team management. The squad management may reconsider Harshal Patel's position if India ultimately decides to play Arshdeep, who had figures of two for 41 runs in four overs. Aside from captain Pandya, the other two pacers, Mavi and Umran Malik, were significantly more outstanding in their efforts.
